He later lived in Kazakhstan and, most recentl,y Jordan, where he continued to work professionally as a photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-118141 size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1291\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/BAKU_Ulduz5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-118141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/BAKU_Ulduz5.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/BAKU_Ulduz5-640x430.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/BAKU_Ulduz5-960x646.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/BAKU_Ulduz5-1536x1033.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Baku<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Herwig explains that he became interested in the underground architecture of the stations while visiting Moscow and Tashkent. Because many of the metro stations were used as nuclear bomb shelters, they were considered military sites and photographing them was prohibited. &#8220;Although I likely could have gotten away with a few images I really wanted to do the series properly and cover all the cities in the former USSR with metro lines not just a few flashy ones in Moscow,&#8221; he told Colossal. &#8220;With restriction being lifted in many of the cities it meant I could have a go at it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herwig&#8217;s images take viewers on a journey through the architectural and political influences of decades pasts. Soviet-era symbols, relief sculptures of significant events and figures, and displays of opulence cover every square meter of the well-maintained subterranean spaces. Often making early morning and late night trips into the stations, Herwig says that many of the otherwise busy hubs appear to be abandoned because of his goal to &#8220;use people with purpose and not to distract from the space and design of the stations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soviet Metro Stations, published by <a href=\"http:\/\/fuel-design.com\/publishing\/soviet-metro-stations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FUEL<\/a>, lands on September 24 and is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/96\/9780995745568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bookshop.org<\/a>.
